Luis Lara

Doctor in Earth Sciences from the Université Paul Sabatier-Toulouse III, France, geologist and Master of Science from the University of Chile. Former director of SERNAGEOMIN, expert in Quaternary volcanology and tectonics. He is also an external professor at the Universidad Católica de Chile and the Universidad de Concepción. His recent work has focused on the geology of active volcanoes and the assessment of volcanic hazard. He has been editor-in-chief for Andean Geology and is currently associate editor for Frontiers in Volcanology. His academic research over the last 10 years has been dedicated to the relationship between crustal tectonics and volcanic activity.

He has expanded his interest in underwater volcanism and the geological evolution of oceanic islands, in addition to active volcanism in Antarctica. In addition to his dedication to basic science, he maintains a long-term interest in applied research and public policy, including popular science. At CIGIDEN his research focuses on the assessment of volcanic hazard and risk from a multidisciplinary perspective.
